Week #7 – Machine Translation

The “garbage in, garbage out” principle means that when putting information into a computer or a code, one must be precise and clear in the wording, as that way the computer will be able to process what one is saying. For example, one cannot use idioms, metaphors, or similes when talking to a computer, as a computer will not understand the words being said, or will take the phrases literally. This is where the “garbage in, garbage out” comes into play. This means that if you put meaningless or badly written words or codes into the computer, the computer will spit garbage right back out. The code or information is only as good as the person who has put it into the computer is. On top of this, being precise and clear with a computer doesn’t just make things easier for the computer as well, it makes things easier for the person creating it since the wording is simpler and easier to understand, meaning it takes less time to create.
